What this test measures
This is a simple reaction time task: one signal, one response, no decision to make. You already know what to do and which target to hit, so nothing is being chosen — the only thing being timed is how quickly a change you were waiting for turns into a movement.
That makes it different from a choice reaction time task, where several signals map to several responses and part of the time you measure is decision-making. Simple reaction time is the cleaner, narrower measure, and it is the one this page uses.
It is worth being clear about what is actually in the number. Light leaves the screen, reaches your retina, the signal travels to the visual cortex, a motor command travels back down your arm, your finger moves, and finally the screen notices the touch. Only part of that chain is anything you would call thinking. The rest is nerve conduction, muscle and hardware.
Why your number looks slower than the ones you have seen elsewhere
Every browser-based reaction test measures you plus your equipment, and the equipment is not a rounding error:
- Screen refresh rate. On a 60 Hz display the colour can only appear at one of 60 moments per second, which adds up to about 17 ms of uncertainty before you have even reacted. A 120 Hz phone halves that.
- Touch sampling. A touchscreen checks for your finger at a fixed rate and then the operating system and the browser each pass the event along. A mouse click typically lands sooner than a finger press.
- What the browser is busy with. A background tab, a slow page, a low-power mode — all of it shows up in the milliseconds.
A number from this page cannot be compared to a laboratory value, and it should not be compared to a number from a different site, a different phone or a different input device. It can be compared to your own earlier attempts on the same device — and that comparison is the only one that tells you anything.
What to look at instead of the single number
- The average, not the best round. One lucky round says very little; five say more.
- The gap between your fastest round and your average. A quick best next to a slow average usually means your attention slipped somewhere in the middle, not that you are slow.
- False starts. If you keep tapping early, you are anticipating the interval rather than reacting to the signal — a different skill, and one this test deliberately refuses to reward.
- The direction over a week. A single session is noise. A trend is information.
What actually moves your result
Sleep is the big one, followed by time of day — most people are measurably slower shortly after waking and late at night. Caffeine, how long you have been staring at a screen, how warm your hands are, how you are sitting and how much you care about the result all contribute. So does simple practice: expect your first two or three attempts to improve on their own, before anything about you has changed.
What the research says about reaction time and age
The largest picture comes from population data rather than from small lab samples. Der and Deary reanalysed reaction times from 7,130 adults in the United Kingdom Health and Lifestyle Survey and found that simple reaction time shows little slowing until around age 50, while choice reaction time slows steadily across the whole adult age range.
The practical reading of that: if you are in your twenties or thirties and the number on this page looks disappointing, your screen, your sleep and your attention are far more likely explanations than anything about your brain.
Questions people ask
What is a good reaction time?
There is no single honest number, because a browser test measures your hardware as well as you. The tables you find online rarely say which device, which screen and which input they were collected on, so they are not a benchmark.
Treat your own first session as your baseline and compare later attempts to it on the same device.
Why is my result different every time I take the test?
Reaction time is naturally variable. Sleep, time of day, caffeine, how long you have been looking at the screen and whether you were expecting the signal all move it, and the variation between your own rounds is usually larger than the difference between two people.
That is why the test averages five rounds instead of reporting one.
Is a mouse faster than a touchscreen?
Usually yes, by a margin that is easily large enough to swamp any real change in your reaction time. A mouse click registers sooner than a finger press on most touchscreens, and a high refresh rate display shows the signal sooner than a 60 Hz one.
Only compare results taken on the same device with the same input.
Can you train your reaction time?
You will get better at this particular task within a few attempts, mostly through practice and knowing what to expect. Whether that carries over to unrelated everyday tasks is much less clear, and the research on far transfer from computerised tasks is contested.
Treat repeated testing as a way to notice your own patterns, not as a way to upgrade your nervous system.

Your best and last score are saved in your own browser using local storage. Nothing is sent to a server, there is no account, and clearing your browsing data removes them.
